Now is the time.
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
|Again, listening to incredible testimony with a packed crowd at last weekend’s Anchorage Caucus
Tonight, you may listen to Mayor Sullivan’s meeting with Anchorage legislators about public employee retirement programs.
Tomorrow is your chance to testify on the operating budget about important issues like education funding, where the legislature has recently made detrimental cuts to pre-kindergarten education.
Mayor, Assembly & Legislators Discuss Retirement
Tonight at 6pm Anchorage legislators are participating in a public teleconference meeting with the Anchorage Assembly and Mayor Dan Sullivan to discuss Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS) and the Teacher’s Retirement System (TRS). To listen to the meeting dial 1-855-463-5009. Ask the operator to be plugged into the meeting in the Speaker’s Chambers for the Anchorage Caucus.

Last Friday the House Finance Subcommittee on Education and Early Development voted to
make major cuts to pre-kindergarten education. I voted in support of three separate amendments that were offered, which would have restored the funding. Unfortunately, the amendments failed.
The public school system in Alaska has seen huge improvements, however, Alaskan 4th graders still have the sixth-worst reading proficiency level in the nation. Pre-K education is a proven way to improve 4th grade reading levels. Pre-K prepares children throughout their academic career and life and is a lasting commitment to education in Alaska. The time is now to focus on education and I am highly disappointed by the subcommittee’s action.
