Special Call to Action

Democracy works when people claim it as their own.
~BILL MOYERS, The Nation, Jan. 22, 2007

Public testimony is an extremely important part of the democratic process. I often hear about the lack of interest in the political system today. I still find that hard to believe. Today, there are several opportunities to become engaged in an issue that is important to you. I’ve sponsored two bills that are scheduled to be heard in House committees that directly focus on SAFETY and FISH.

Thursday, Feb. 16 @1pm (2nd on agenda) – House Transportation Committee

HB 157 – “Act relating to the use of headlights when operating a motor vehicle.”

This bill is simple. Headlights should be on while driving. In response to a recommendation by the Alaska Highway Safety Office in their Strategic Highway Safety Plan and the AARP, the bill requires car and truck headlight use at all times. Studies show that the use of headlights on highways reduces fatal crashes and improves safety.

Say NO to Frankenfish

Thursday, Feb. 23 @5pm TBA – House Fisheries Committee

HB 100 - “Prohibiting the growth or cultivation of genetically modified fish in the state.”

The debate started 15 years ago when a Canadian company, began splicing fish DNA with the goal of generating a species that would grow faster for a larger than natural fish. In 2010, the debate thickened when the FDA was asked to approve genetically-modified salmon for mass consumption on the market. This legislation joins others around the country in a resounding “no!” to genetically modified fish.

Be Active in the Process

There are three best ways to be involved with bills that are being heard in the House or Senate:

1) Write a Letter:

Rep. Kawasaki
State Capitol
Juneau, AK 99801

2) Send an Email:

3) Sign up to testify via phone during the committee. Meetings are set up through the Fairbanks LIO office. You must be present to testify and committees typically require you to sign up in advance, which you can do through the bill sponsor’s office.

Finally, I need your help in showing the rest of the state that we are in an energy crisis. Send me a copy of your recent electricity and fuel oil bills by mail, or email to help us make the case.

Your participation in the public process is the most important part. If you feel passionately about either of these bills, and certainly about your energy costs, please contact my office in one the ways above.
