Dear Neighbor,

Meeting Fairbanks Families

I will host my second and final constituent meeting this Saturday, March 26th. This will be the final time we will be able to meet until the end of session to have a dialogue on Alaska’s future. There is a lot going on down here in Juneau and you can provide valuable input that I can take back to the Capital. The operating budget has moved to the Senate Finance Committee where they are hearing public testimony. Potential options to reduce the burden of high energy costs are being discussed but we must act soon. Fairbanks cannot afford to endure another winter of high energy costs next year. Please join me and share your thoughts about these and other issues that are important to you and Fairbanks.

The meeting will be held at the Noel Wien Library on Saturday, March 26th from noon until 2:00 PM. The meeting will also feature an update via teleconference from US Senator Mark Begich and a visit from Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins.

Doesn’t Guarantee Anything!
The $2 billion oil tax breaks for the major oil producers that the governor proposed in HB 110 is currently being heard in the House Finance Committee. Today, BP testified once again that they cannot guarantee more exploration or jobs on the North Slope as a result of the bill. At an estimated cost of $2 billion dollars a year, the legislation is too expensive a gamble for Alaskan families.

If this bill passes, the oil industry will drain $13 billion dollars of Alaska’s savings account within 5 years. There are still too many unanswered questions, no promises from major oil producers and too many unforeseen costs to Alaskans. Please consider giving some comments on the impacts this bill will have on the state.
